I have cruised with my parents and my son more times than I can count. Multigenerational travel is genuinely comfortable territory for our family. So when I booked a Christmas Markets river cruise through Germany on the Riverside Debussy in December 2025, I thought I knew what we were getting into.

I did not. What I got was one of the best trips of my life, and a story I now tell every client who’s on the fence about river cruising with their own family.

Going In, We Had Real Doubts

River cruising has a reputation, and for the most part, it’s earned. These are traditionally adult trips. The first thing most river cruise lines tell you upfront is that there are no kids’ amenities onboard. No kids’ club, no dedicated youth staff, no waterslide to occupy a four-year-old for an afternoon. Normally, that wouldn’t bother us much since we don’t typically use kids’ clubs anyway. But it did mean we were walking into a ship with zero infrastructure built for a four-year-old.

Then there was the food question, which honestly worried me and my mother more than anything else. We are both picky eaters. Luxury cruising, in our minds, meant fancy food, the kind of small, elaborate plates that look beautiful and leave you hungry an hour later. Would there be anything we’d actually want to eat? Would my son? We genuinely didn’t know.

So we boarded with excitement, but also with real uncertainty.

Day One: The Moment We Knew It Would Be Fine

On our first day onboard, my son was exhausted and so was my mom. My dad and I had an excursion booked, so we made the call to leave them behind. My mom and son headed to the buffet for their first onboard meal while we left for our walking tour.

I will admit, we were nervous leaving them. It was new for all of us.

While we were out, I checked in. And what I got back were nothing but rave reviews. My mom told me they had plenty to eat, the staff took incredible care of them, and when they were ready to head back, someone walked them all the way to their stateroom. Not pointed them in the right direction. Walked them there.

That was the moment we knew. We were going to be fine. Better than fine.

A Nearly Empty Ship and an Unforgettable Crew

Our sailing ran close to Christmas, ending on December 21st, which meant the ship was far from full. River cruise lines typically run close to a 1:1 staff-to-guest ratio. On our sailing, there were only 36 guests on the entire ship.

What that meant in practice is hard to fully explain unless you’ve experienced it. The staff didn’t just know our names by day two. They knew our routines, our preferences, what my son liked to eat, what time my parents preferred dinner. Every port stop felt curated specifically for us, because in a very real sense, it was.

We spent six nights with that crew, and by the end, we had fallen equally in love with the ports, the ship, and every single person working on it.

The Small Touches That Made It Unforgettable

Here’s what stays with me most, even now. It wasn’t the big moments. It was the small ones.

One of our stops was the original location where Haribo gummy bears were created. When we got back onboard, the women in guest services had arranged a surprise for my son: a teddy bear, a handwritten letter telling him a story about the gummy bears, and a bag of candy waiting for him. Nobody asked us to do that. They just did it, because that’s who they are.

Every single night, our room attendant would take my son’s toy cars, the ones he’d left out on the table, and arrange them into a brand new scene during turndown service. A racetrack one night. A little parking lot the next. A car wash setup after that. He looked forward to it every evening like it was the best part of his day, because honestly, it was.

Those are the moments that told us everything about what kind of company we were sailing with.

The Reunion That Changed How I See This Business

In March 2026, I attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo, and the Riverside Debussy happened to be one of the ships hosting events. I went over for lunch onboard, not entirely sure if I’d see anyone I recognized from our sailing months earlier.

The second we made eye contact, they knew exactly who I was.

They asked about my parents by name. They asked about my son. We took pictures together like old friends catching up after time apart, because in every way that mattered, that’s exactly what it was. I have sailed on 35 ocean cruises in my career and personal life combined. I have never experienced anything like that moment. Not once.

That’s when I knew Riverside Luxury wasn’t just a great trip. It was a different kind of hospitality entirely, and I wanted to go back.

Why We’re Already Booked for Tulip Season

My mother loves flowers, genuinely loves them, and at the expo I fell completely in love with Amsterdam. Pairing the two felt like the most natural decision in the world.

We are now booked on the Riverside Debussy again for tulip season at the end of March 2027, sailing through the Netherlands at the exact moment the fields are in full bloom. After everything we experienced in December, there was no version of this where we didn’t go back.

If You’ve Been Hesitant About River Cruising With Your Family, Let’s Talk

I know the hesitation. I had it myself. The lack of kids’ amenities, the worry about food, the assumption that river cruising is only for retirees on their own. I understand every one of those concerns because I walked onboard with them too.

What I found instead was a crew that took care of my son like he was their own, a level of attention I have never experienced on any ocean cruise, and an experience that brought three generations of my family closer together over six unforgettable nights.

If you’re considering a river cruise for your family, whether you’re bringing young kids, your parents, or both, I’d love to help you plan it. I know exactly what to expect, because I’ve lived it.
